Lazy Boy Steak a Roni.
Sometimes the travel Karma gets taken over by mother nature. Road repair or bad weather with high winds holding up ferry travel. I have learned to carry the essentials incase one has to eat alfresco with no power where staying and a shut down of the area services. Ruffing it at the a remote cottage during one of those severe weather evenings. It’s for this reason my supply hamper is packed with simple foods. This trip I brought along a pack of Spanish rice-a-roni subbing moisture using some MottsĀ clamato mix , dried peas, pickled green banana pepper, carrot chopped tomato, some iron skillet dry mushrooms and big spoon of butter. A frozen portion of strip loin met that fire place cooking in a cast iron fry pan takes care of the protein with some salt and pepper. I like to take advantage of a fire place. I have a small cache some charcoal, hickory/cherry wood chips for some good BBQ smoke. I got a nice big 18 oz. hunk of angus sirloin with about 15% marble and trimmed lean on the fat cap. This stops flare ups. I massaged it with some ground pepper, good dusting of garlic powder and kosher salt. Let it rest forĀ a few minutes to soak in while you pour a glass of wine for your sweetie. The fire is looking good, place a new log in front of the heat and using a flat bottom piece makes it much more user simple. Now run the palm of your hand about 12 inches along the heat and feel the temperature on your skin. If it is throwing enough heat, its time to insert a trusty cooking roast fork into the cut of beef. Make sure it is secure or if it should fall off you’ll feel like an ash, or two won’t hurt. I find that a good resting spot should catch just enough heat to start the meat to sizzle and hold for 7/8 minutes, Now turn over and about another 5/6 minutes will give you a good medium rare to medium very flavourful steak to slice up and share. If you wrap up a few cut up potatoes, onions, mushrooms and peppers/tomatoes and put some seasoning’s, some olive oil mix and place in a aluminum foil package and resting close to the fire about half hour before you start the steak, same with some bread and you have yourself a chalet dinner at home! Presto Yum!
